Kendo is the modern form of Japanese sword fighting. Using bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armor (bogu), practitioners train in combat — but the focus is not on violence or strength, but on courtesy, respect, and discipline.
Those who learn the fundamentals properly can continue to grow stronger at any age. In Japan, there are many masters who actively train well into their 80s. Women and smaller individuals can also defeat larger, stronger opponents — technique, spirit, and posture are what truly matter.
Throughout Hessen, there are numerous Kendo clubs offering training almost daily. Joint practice sessions with other clubs are always welcome.
