He is called "the young lion of the shamisen". Koji started playing the shamisen, a traditional Japanese instrument that has three strings, as a child. With his extraordinary interpretation of Japanese folk songs and his virtuoso playing of the Tsugaru shamisen and the Okinawa shamisen, he won many prizes in national competitions.
