The Japanese mask dance group Mahoroba comes from Daazaifu in the Japanese prefecture of Fukuoka. This is also where they have mainly been active so far. Mahoroba aims to express Japanese tradition and culture through their dance performances. The uniqueness of their dances is emphasized by the fact that the dancers' faces are hidden with masks and hats. This, along with the unique movements, which are also based on martial arts kata, emphasizes the dancer as well as the theme of each performance.
Mahoroba have performed at various events in Japan and abroad. These include the 60th Baekye Cultural Festival in Buyeo-gun, South Korea, where they performed at a joint memorial service, as well as at the International Mask Dance Festival Competition, which they won.
Mahoroba plan to focus more on international performances in the future, so we are happy to welcome them to this year's Main Matsuri.
