A trip to Japan is a special experience, but how can you plan it sensibly without losing track of flights, accommodation, rail connections and countless possible destinations? In this workshop, Arian Rahmatzai offers practical advice for preparing an individual journey through Japan. Participants learn what to consider when choosing the time of year, how to put together a suitable itinerary, and how to travel by rail and public transport. The workshop also covers accommodation, budgeting, internet access, luggage, reservations and cultural considerations. It is suitable both for first-time visitors to Japan and for anyone wishing to prepare their next trip in a more relaxed and organised way.

The Cyberpunk Red setting takes place around 30 years before the world of the video game Cyberpunk 2077 and the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In a world scarred by war, environmental disasters and corporate rule, players take on the role of so-called edgerunners. They carry out dangerous jobs for eddies and try to build their reputation. The introductory scenario throws the characters directly into a job, a short run that escalates into gunfights and chases. Playing time is approximately 90 minutes. Content warning: descriptions of gun violence and fatal injuries. The session is therefore suitable for ages 16 and over. Characters and dice are provided, the rules are explained, and no previous knowledge is required.

The Japanese artist Kazuya Usui is a Sumi-e teacher, illustrator and internationally sought-after live painter. His artistic roots include the design of hand-painted clothing. Today, his brush creates traditional Japanese motifs as well as murals, packaging designs and large-scale live artworks. His work is characterised by powerful, calligraphy-inspired brushstrokes and subjects such as dragons, samurai, tigers and koi. Since 2019, he has regularly captivated Main Matsuri audiences with his live-painting performances. In three coordinated masterclasses, Kazuya Usui teaches participants how to work with brush, ink and paper. He demonstrates how different brush positions, levels of pressure and ink gradations bring forms to life. In this beginner class, expressive dogs and cats are created step by step. Kazuya Usui shows how body shape, fur, movement and character can be captured with just a few deliberate brushstrokes. The workshop is intended for anyone trying Sumi-e for the first time or wishing to learn the basic techniques. No previous experience is required. Please wear clothing that may get dirty, as the ink can stain and discolour fabric.

Selected examples and characteristic design elements show how these spaces are composed and what creates their distinctive atmosphere. The focus includes spatial structure, proportion, materials, light and the relationship between interior and surroundings. The talk is aimed at people approaching the subject for the first time, while also offering those already familiar with it a more detailed view of the design of traditional Japanese spaces and their enduring impact.

Step by step, simple squares of paper are transformed into small figures, animals or decorative shapes, without scissors or glue. You will learn basic folding techniques and discover how patience, precision and creativity can turn a flat sheet into a three-dimensional work of art. The workshop is suitable both for beginners and for anyone wishing to deepen their existing origami skills. You can of course take your finished creations home with you.

How can Japanese aesthetics be translated into a room through both small and large changes? This talk explores how Japanese aesthetics can also be incorporated into homes outside Japan. Selected examples show the role played by materials, light, atmosphere, reduction and spatial order. The central question is how smaller adjustments, as well as larger design decisions, can help create a calmer and more harmonious environment. The talk also provides insight into the philosophy of studio ukiyo interior architecture and Flora Immler’s approach to developing spaces that bring people into the present moment. Afterwards, participants can arrange their first material ideas and explore in practice how Japanese aesthetics might be transferred to their own space. This open-ended section offers an initial approach to materials, atmosphere, colour and spatial effect. The resulting mood boards or ideas can then be viewed and discussed together in a small group. The format combines informative input with a short design exercise and creates a direct connection to the participants’ own homes.

In this workshop, Anica from KimonoDreams takes you into the fascinating world of kimono. You will learn about the different components of traditional Japanese clothing, their cultural significance, and the many rules and details involved in putting on a kimono. In a practical demonstration, Anica shows step by step how a kimono is put on, tied and completed with the appropriate accessories. Two participants will have the special opportunity to be fully dressed in kimono. Everyone else can follow the process at close range, ask questions and discover the art of kimono dressing.

Under the expert guidance of Dominik Gußmann, each participant will create their own print using the large new lithography press “Elisabeth”. The template required for this has been prepared as a negative by Masumi Knoblauch from the Japanese Language and Cultural Centre Frankfurt am Main.

They will learn about its history, the expressive power of the puppets and the interaction between movement, music and storytelling. The workshop also demonstrates how a Bunraku puppet is controlled and brought to life, the roles performed by the puppeteers, and the concentration, precision and teamwork required for a performance. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn and try out the basic principles of puppet manipulation themselves.

Participants learn how body language, voice, facial expression, posture and emotion work together. Short exercises explore spontaneous reactions, different moods and the gradual process of approaching a role. The focus is on the joy of acting, perception and the question of how to become fully immersed in a character for a moment. No previous experience is required, only openness, curiosity and a willingness to experiment."

How does dubbing actually work, and what does it take for a voice to merge convincingly with a character? In this taster course, Sven Plate offers a lively introduction to working in a dubbing studio. Participants learn how dialogue is recorded, why timing, emphasis, breathing and emotion are so important, and how to approach a character. The central question is: how can you enter a role, understand its mood and give it personality and expression through your own voice? The course is not limited to theory. Under expert guidance, participants can try out initial scenes and gain their own experience in front of the microphone. No previous experience is required, only curiosity, enthusiasm for acting and a desire to use your voice.

The Japanese tea ceremony is much more than preparing and drinking tea. It is an art form that combines calmness, mindfulness, respect, and harmony. During this demonstration, visitors will gain an insight into the process of a traditional tea ceremony. They will see how matcha is prepared and served using selected utensils, and learn about the meaning of gestures, posture, silence, and attention. In the following workshop, participants can try out individual elements themselves and experience how mindful action and concentration can turn a simple cup of tea into a special moment. In this workshop, Petra Klingl from Rothkiefer Verlag introduces participants to the fascinating world of haiku, a traditional Japanese form of poetry that condenses observations of nature, moods and fleeting moments in a distinctive way. Participants will learn what characterises a haiku, how images and emotions can be connected through language, and why what remains unsaid is so important. Through short exercises, they will gradually create their own haiku, which can then be discussed and developed together. No previous experience is required. An enjoyment of language, observation and creative writing is all that is needed.

How can a character’s appearance be recreated effectively with make-up and adapted to your own face? In this workshop, TitaniaCosplay explains what makes successful cosplay make-up. Participants receive practical tips on foundation, contouring, eye make-up, eyebrows and small details that can deliberately alter or emphasise facial features. The workshop also covers selecting colours and shapes to match the reference and creating make-up that works well both in photographs and on stage. The session is suitable for beginners as well as experienced cosplayers wishing to refine their techniques. No previous experience is required.

In this creative workshop, Shigemi Muroi shows how Japanese newspapers can be turned into distinctive and practical bags. Through skilful folding, gluing and reinforcement, the printed pages are transformed step by step into unique pieces. Japanese characters, photographs and typographic elements make every bag one of a kind. At the same time, the workshop demonstrates how everyday materials that might otherwise be discarded can be reused creatively. No previous experience is required. Participants can of course take their finished newspaper bag home.

The history of armour is always closely connected to its practical use. No form of armour developed without a purpose: changes in material, construction, and the way armour was worn were always responses to new weapons, changing battle tactics, and social developments. In this presentation, visitors will gain an engaging overview of the evolution of Japanese armour through the ages – from the early lamellar armour of the Kofun and Heian periods to the impressive Ō-yoroi worn by mounted samurai, and finally to the lighter and more flexible Tōsei Gusoku, which became widespread with the rise of firearms in the 16th century. The presentation will also explain how these armours were worn, what kind of protection they offered, and what practical advantages they provided on the battlefield. This creates a deeper understanding of how aesthetics, craftsmanship, technique, and martial practice are closely connected in Japanese armour.

This lecture is all about manga: What exactly are manga? How do they differ from Western comics? And why did they suddenly become so incredibly successful in Germany around 30 years ago? The lecture offers an engaging insight into the unique characteristics of Japanese manga culture, including its storytelling techniques, visual language, and wide range of themes. It also looks at how manga found their way to Germany in the 1990s and why they had such a strong impact on an entire generation of readers. The speaker was one of the first manga translators in Germany and was involved in the founding of EMA, one of the key manga publishers in the German-speaking market. As a Japanologist with a Master’s degree, he has conducted academic research on manga and has published extensively on Japanese pop culture. This lecture combines personal insights from the early days of the manga boom in Germany with well-founded background knowledge on Japanese pop culture.

A festival for the whole family, whether living or dead: that is the promise of Japan’s Obon festival. We take a closer look at this fascinating Buddhist tradition and how it is practised and celebrated in Japan today.

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork originating in Japan. Pressure is applied to specific areas of the body using the fingers and palms, combined with gentle stretches. The treatment may help you relax, reduce stress, release tension and support a general sense of well-being. Many people experience Shiatsu as deeply relaxing and balancing: awareness of the body can increase, breathing may become calmer, and participants often feel more at ease and refreshed afterwards. Shiatsu is a complementary method and is not a substitute for medical treatment.

Inspired by Japanese onigiri, these cute figures gain their own character through different eyes, mouths, facial expressions and small details. Whether cheerful, in love, cheeky or dreamy, there are no limits to your creativity. At the end of the workshop, you can take home your own individually designed OMGiri. No previous experience is required.

The Witcher setting is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Geralt saga and became especially well known through the video games and television series. Players take on the role of monster hunters. Lumberjacks have disappeared in the forests surrounding a village. Can the characters help, or will they also fall victim to the mysterious mist in the wooded valleys? In this special lecture and exchange format, students from Fukushima share their personal experiences, their lives today and their perspectives for the future. Accompanied by the organisation Earth Walkers, which has been enabling encounter and exchange programmes for young people from Fukushima for many years, participants will gain a direct insight into the consequences of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. At the same time, the talk will also focus on reconstruction, everyday life for young people in the region, and their thoughts on the environment, energy, peace and international understanding. The students will speak in Japanese or English. Translation support will be provided on site. Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity for conversation and personal exchange with the students and their accompanying representatives.

In this workshop, Eva-Maria Adamczyk introduces you to the traditional Japanese art of ink painting, Sumi-e. With only a few deliberately placed brushstrokes, expressive images emerge from black ink. The focus is not on reproducing nature exactly, but on capturing its essence. What does “Matsuri” actually mean – and why do festivals play such an important cultural role in Japan? In this presentation, Dennis Latifovic from the SAMURAI Museum Berlin offers an engaging insight into the history of Japanese matsuri and their significance up to the present day. Participants will learn how matsuri developed from religious, seasonal, and community-based traditions, and what role shrines, rituals, music, dances, processions, and regional customs play in these festivals. The presentation invites visitors to experience matsuri not only as colourful celebrations, but also to better understand their historical roots, symbols, and social importance.

All you need is curiosity and an enjoyment of making things.

In this workshop, participants will gain an insight into the Japanese martial art of Iaido. The focus is not on combat, but on conscious, controlled, and precise movement with the sword. Iaido combines posture, concentration, breathing, and inner calm. Participants will learn more about the history, etiquette, and basic principles of this traditional art form and discover how much mindfulness, discipline, and presence are reflected in each movement. Under expert guidance, the first basic techniques and simple movement sequences will be introduced. No previous experience is required – only respect, attention, and an interest in Japanese martial arts.

A special break from the bustle of the festival: calm, atmospheric and full of Japanese magic.

In this demonstration, the Japanese Language and Culture Center Frankfurt am Main offers an insight into the fascinating world of Ikebana – the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement. Ikebana is much more than simply arranging flowers decoratively. At its heart are harmony, line, space, silence, and the conscious relationship between human beings and nature. Every blossom, every branch, and every empty space is placed with care and given its own expressive power. During the demonstration, visitors can experience step by step how an Ikebana arrangement is created. It becomes clear how just a few carefully selected elements can grow into a composition that is calm, clear, and deeply expressive. The demonstration invites visitors to discover the beauty of reduction and to experience Japanese aesthetics in a special way.

In this workshop, Sasei offers a fascinating introduction to Irezumi, the traditional Japanese art of tattooing. Participants will learn about its history, typical motifs such as dragons, koi, tigers and peonies, and their symbolic meanings. Alongside design, line work and the composition of large-scale motifs, practical work is also central to the session. Under expert guidance, participants can try out initial techniques on suitable practice material and develop a feel for tattooing. No previous experience is required. Curiosity, a steady hand and an interest in Japanese art and visual language are all that is needed.

Temari are balls artfully embroidered with colourful threads, made in Japan according to a centuries-old tradition. Originally created from scraps of fabric and yarn, they developed over time into elaborate works of art and popular good-luck charms. In this workshop, participants learn about the history and meaning of Temari. Step by step, they discover how the balls are constructed and decorated with geometric patterns, colours and threads. The result is an individual small artwork that combines patience, creativity and craftsmanship. No previous experience is required.

In this workshop, Takuya Okamoto, Residence Chef of the Consulate General of Japan in Frankfurt am Main, will create a unique culinary experience together with the participants. Mr. Okamoto will introduce participants to the world of Japanese cuisine and prepare a meal with them that they have most likely never experienced in this form before. The workshop focuses not only on cooking together, but also on discovering Japanese food culture, special ingredients, and the refined art of preparation. Further details about the content of the workshop will follow later this month. The course will be held in Japanese. An interpreter will be present on site to accompany and translate the content.

How does dubbing actually work, and what does it take for a voice to merge convincingly with a character? In this taster course, Sven Plate offers a lively introduction to working in a dubbing studio. Participants learn how dialogue is recorded, why timing, emphasis, breathing and emotion are so important, and how to approach a character. The central question is: how can you enter a role, understand its mood and give it personality and expression through your own voice? The course is not limited to theory. Under expert guidance, participants can try out initial scenes and gain their own experience in front of the microphone. No previous experience is required, only curiosity, enthusiasm for acting and a desire to use your voice.

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork originating in Japan. Pressure is applied to specific areas of the body using the fingers and palms, combined with gentle stretches. The treatment may help you relax, reduce stress, release tension and support a general sense of well-being. Many people experience Shiatsu as deeply relaxing and balancing: awareness of the body can increase, breathing may become calmer, and participants often feel more at ease and refreshed afterwards. Shiatsu is a complementary method and is not a substitute for medical treatment.

In this workshop, we will explore the Seichō Yosakoi Naruko Odori together, the traditional foundational dance of Yosakoi. Yosakoi is shaped by creative and freely designed choreography. One important element is that part of the original Yosakoi melody must be retained. Together with the participants, we will return to the roots of this lively Japanese dance style, learn its basic movements and dance with the characteristic wooden Naruko clappers. No previous experience is required. All you need is an enjoyment of movement, rhythm and dancing together.

The Witcher setting is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Geralt saga and became especially well known through the video games and television series. Players take on the role of monster hunters. Lumberjacks have disappeared in the forests surrounding a village. Can the characters help, or will they also fall victim to the mysterious mist in the wooded valleys? Playing time is approximately 90 minutes. Content warning: combat and a possible moral dilemma at the end. The session is therefore suitable for ages 16 and over. Characters and dice are provided, the rules are explained, and no previous knowledge is required.

The Japanese artist Kazuya Usui is a Sumi-e teacher, illustrator and internationally sought-after live painter. His artistic roots include the design of hand-painted clothing. Today, his brush creates traditional Japanese motifs as well as murals, packaging designs and large-scale live artworks. His work is characterised by powerful, calligraphy-inspired brushstrokes and subjects such as dragons, samurai, tigers and koi. Since 2019, he has regularly captivated Main Matsuri audiences with his live-painting performances. In three coordinated masterclasses, Kazuya Usui teaches participants how to work with brush, ink and paper. He demonstrates how different brush positions, levels of pressure and ink gradations bring forms to life. The advanced masterclass is devoted to a particularly powerful subject: the hawk. Under Kazuya Usui’s guidance, participants learn to capture the bird’s posture, plumage, gaze and dynamism with precise yet expressive brushstrokes. The workshop is aimed at advanced participants who are already familiar with brush and ink and wish to tackle a more demanding composition. Please wear clothing that may get dirty, as the ink can stain and discolour fabric.

How can gifts, bottles or everyday objects be wrapped stylishly without paper? In this workshop, Keiko Wakita presents the traditional Japanese art of Furoshiki. Using square cloths and a variety of folding and knotting techniques, participants can quickly create decorative wrapping, practical carrying bags and individual gift ideas. They will not only learn different techniques, but also discover more about the history and meaning of this sustainable Japanese tradition. No previous experience is required. An enjoyment of creating and trying things out is all that is needed.

In this workshop, participants will gain a first insight into the Japanese martial art of Kendo, the “way of the sword.” Kendo combines physical movement, concentration, discipline, and respect, and is practiced today with bamboo swords known as shinai. Participants will learn basic postures, simple movement sequences, and first striking techniques. The focus is not only on strength, but above all on attention, body control, timing, and the right inner attitude. This workshop is aimed at anyone who would like to try Kendo and learn more about this traditional Japanese martial art. No previous experience is required.

How do you translate sound effects in horror and mystery manga while keeping them truly frightening? What does spraying blood sound like after the fifth stab? Together with manga translator Cheyenne Dreißigacker, we explore these and other fascinating aspects of translating from Japanese.

How can you tell whether an image was created by a human or generated with artificial intelligence? In this workshop, Arian Rahmatzai explains typical features, errors and irregularities that may indicate AI-generated content. Using clear examples, participants learn to look more closely, assess sources critically and evaluate digital content more consciously. The workshop covers not only technical indicators, but also questions of authorship, manipulation, transparency and the responsible use of AI. No previous experience is required. Curiosity, attentiveness and a critical eye are the most important prerequisites.

Under the expert guidance of Dominik Gußmann, each participant will create their own print using the large new lithography press “Elisabeth”. The template required for this has been prepared as a negative by Masumi Knoblauch from the Japanese Language and Cultural Centre Frankfurt am Main.

This workshop offers compact, practical insights into posing techniques for your next photo shoot. Using clear examples, you will learn about concepts, eye direction and body tension, from character-appropriate stances and natural movement to dynamic poses. You will discover how to combine pose, facial expression and other elements harmoniously in your next images.

The history of armour is always closely connected to its practical use. No form of armour developed without a purpose: changes in material, construction, and the way armour was worn were always responses to new weapons, changing battle tactics, and social developments. In this presentation, visitors will gain an engaging overview of the evolution of Japanese armour through the ages – from the early lamellar armour of the Kofun and Heian periods to the impressive Ō-yoroi worn by mounted samurai, and finally to the lighter and more flexible Tōsei Gusoku, which became widespread with the rise of firearms in the 16th century. The presentation will also explain how these armours were worn, what kind of protection they offered, and what practical advantages they provided on the battlefield. This creates a deeper understanding of how aesthetics, craftsmanship, technique, and martial practice are closely connected in Japanese armour.

Temari are balls artfully embroidered with colourful threads, made in Japan according to a centuries-old tradition. Originally created from scraps of fabric and yarn, they developed over time into elaborate works of art and popular good-luck charms. In this workshop, participants learn about the history and meaning of Temari. Step by step, they discover how the balls are constructed and decorated with geometric patterns, colours and threads. The result is an individual small artwork that combines patience, creativity and craftsmanship. No previous experience is required.

How can a special moment be captured in only a few words? In this workshop, Petra Klingl from Rothkiefer Verlag introduces participants to the fascinating world of haiku, a traditional Japanese form of poetry that condenses observations of nature, moods and fleeting moments in a distinctive way. Participants will learn what characterises a haiku, how images and emotions can be connected through language, and why what remains unsaid is so important. Through short exercises, they will gradually create their own haiku, which can then be discussed and developed together. No previous experience is required. An enjoyment of language, observation and creative writing is all that is needed.

Japanese tea is much more than a drink – it is an experience for all the senses. In this workshop, Mayumi Inayama-Thenent introduces participants to the world of Japanese tea and shows how aroma, color, taste, warmth, and calmness come together. Together, participants will explore different impressions related to Japanese tea: How does the taste change through preparation, temperature, or mindful attention? What role do mindfulness, atmosphere, and conscious enjoyment play? The focus is not only on knowledge, but above all on personal experience. The workshop invites participants to pause for a moment, discover Japanese tea culture in a sensory way, and enjoy tea with renewed awareness. No previous experience is required.

Cheyenne Dreißigacker has been researching the many forms and representations of cats in Japan and Japanese society for around ten years. This session focuses on the mythological portrayal of cats, including their appearance as yōkai. From bakeneko and nekomata to the widely known maneki-neko, we explore how cats transform and are represented in Japan, and take a look behind the velvet-pawed scenes.

The workshop is aimed at anyone considering a creative degree or already working on their portfolio.

In this creative workshop, you will design your own Japanese-inspired fox mask. Using colours, patterns and individual details, you can transform a simple mask into a personal work of art. Whether classically red and white, mysterious, playful or colourful, there are no limits to your imagination. You can draw inspiration from traditional kitsune motifs or develop a completely original design. No previous experience is required. At the end of the workshop, you can take your self-designed fox mask home.

In this workshop, LIAN, the artist behind “Rabenfluch”, which received the Tancho Award at the Leipzig Book Fair in 2026, will show you how to guide your readers’ eyes through effective paneling and how to structure your manga or comic pages in a clear, understandable, and impactful way. You will be introduced to the most important basics of visual storytelling and reading flow: How do panels work? Where should speech bubbles be placed? What role do eye direction, page composition, and other visual elements play? Through practical examples, you will learn how to design your pages so that story, atmosphere, and reading flow come together effectively. At the end of the workshop, there can be a short feedback session for pages brought by participants. These pages should be submitted in advance by e-mail to lars.cramer@main-matsuri.com, so that LIAN can respond to them in a focused and helpful way. Participation is open to ages 15 and up.

This workshop offers participants an engaging introduction to Bunraku, a traditional form of Japanese puppet theatre. They will learn about its history, the expressive power of the puppets and the interaction between movement, music and storytelling. The workshop also demonstrates how a Bunraku puppet is controlled and brought to life, the roles performed by the puppeteers, and the concentration, precision and teamwork required for a performance. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn and try out the basic principles of puppet manipulation themselves.

How can Japanese aesthetics be translated into a room through both small and large changes? This talk explores how Japanese aesthetics can also be incorporated into homes outside Japan. Selected examples show the role played by materials, light, atmosphere, reduction and spatial order. The central question is how smaller adjustments, as well as larger design decisions, can help create a calmer and more harmonious environment. The talk also provides insight into the philosophy of studio ukiyo interior architecture and Flora Immler’s approach to developing spaces that bring people into the present moment. Afterwards, participants can arrange their first material ideas and explore in practice how Japanese aesthetics might be transferred to their own space. This open-ended section offers an initial approach to materials, atmosphere, colour and spatial effect. The resulting mood boards or ideas can then be viewed and discussed together in a small group. The format combines informative input with a short design exercise and creates a direct connection to the participants’ own homes.

In this workshop, participants will gain an insight into the Japanese martial art of Iaido. The focus is not on combat, but on conscious, controlled, and precise movement with the sword. Iaido combines posture, concentration, breathing, and inner calm. Participants will learn more about the history, etiquette, and basic principles of this traditional art form and discover how much mindfulness, discipline, and presence are reflected in each movement. Under expert guidance, the first basic techniques and simple movement sequences will be introduced. No previous experience is required – only respect, attention, and an interest in Japanese martial arts.

In this approximately 30-minute workshop, participants will gain a first insight into the basics of Kenjutsu, the traditional Japanese art of sword techniques, using Hokushin Ittō-ryū Hyōhō as an example. Under expert guidance, participants will learn basic postures, movement sequences, and simple techniques. The focus is not only on handling the sword, but also on concentration, body control, distance, respect, and the mindful execution of each movement. The necessary training equipment will be provided. No previous experience is required – this workshop is open to anyone who would like to experience Japanese swordsmanship in a practical way.
